Do I Have a Chance at Stanford?? Advice?

Take a trip 'round the internet.

Okay, so I’m a Freshman going into my Sophomore year of high school (4.0 unweighted GPA), home schooled (actually more self taught, my mother can’t keep up with me haha). I REALLY want to get into Stanford University (for premed). I haven’t taken my PSAT, but I will very soon. If I keep this up, do you think I have a shot?

These are the courses I’ve taken so far….

- Anatomy and Physiology
- Health
- Nutrition (college book)
- Biology (college book)
- Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry (college book)
- Biochemistry (online college course)
- Physics
- Physical Science
- Algebra I
- Algebra II
- Geometry
- Trigonometry
- U.S. History
- World History
- European Civilization from Renaissance to Present (UC Berkeley course)
- Medical Terminology
- Debate class
- English Lit
- Human Geography (college book)
- German (fluent)

This year I’ll be taking:

- Pre-Calculus
- Calculus
- Computer Science
- Microbiology
- Anthropology (college level course)
- German (more in-depth, about their language, history and culture)
- Art
- AP Biology
- AP Environmental Science
- AP English Language and Composition
- AP World History
- AP Psychology
- Latin
- couple other small courses

I volunteer at YFU, SADD, Kids With a Cause, Habitat for Humanity, a local tutoring center, nursing home, hospital, cancer advocate, sometimes tutor math and science, babysit, play the piano. I’m involved in a knitting, and German club, dance class, volleyball, and kickboxing class. Junior year I’ll apply to be in a couple Honor Societies, etc.

Please feel free to add anything! (:

Thanks!

To lizzie23: Oh no, she doesn’t. I mostly just teach myself (and I like it that way). :)
To lizzie23: Actually I am. We (my mother and I) talked to a professor at our local C.C. and he said all my sciences (including Organic Chemistry), mathematics, history, foreign language, social studies, etc. where well above the high schools standards.
neniaf: All I’m asking, is if you think I have a chance of getting admitted to Stanford. You do not have to believe me–most don’t…but I swear to you, I have done ever one of those classes.

dont take this the wrong way and you should be proud of yourself, i dont get why every kids who gets a 30 or above ACT and a 4.0 thinks that they will no get into the college of their choice. take a look at some other posts, you will find alot of similar posts. of i have totally perfect tests scores. and a a 5.0 GPA will i get in……take a look from another persons perspective and pat yourself on the back, you look like you should get in right? i think so

Your mother teaches you all of these classes? You may want to look into what the college’s outlook is on home schooled applicants. Contact the college and tell them you are home schooled because since you said you are teaching many of these yourself I would worry that you are not getting the proper instruction. You can’t possibly teach yourself courses like organic chemistry (or at least from the university’s stand point you can’t). So definitely look into what they say about home schooled applicants.

It depends on how they assess your learning. If this is through an official home-schooling program, and they have evidence that you have learned as much as you should have from these courses, then I would say that you have a good chance. If you have just been reading books on your own, then it is hard for a school to really judge. I don’t think Stanford would take the word of a professor at a local community college on this. Forgive my skepticism, but I find it hard to believe that there are enough hours in the day to really learn all of the things you claim to have mastered in a year. I don’t doubt that you are bright, but I’ve known people with genius IQs who didn’t do a fraction of this!

My guess is that your SAT scores will matter a lot. You will need as much evidence as possible that the work you have been doing is comparable to that of top high school students to be considered for a school as competitive as Stanford.

I find it a little frightening that you have already left your mother in the dust during your freshman year in high school and that you would continue to be home-schooled. You may like teaching yourself, but there are limits to that, which is why there are universities in the first place. Stanford does have an online high school for gifted students – you may want to look into that, if you are thinking of Stanford as a possibility.
