It looks like your boyfriend may have some confidence/depression issues that you have no control over. Although, some counselling would help him a great deal.

You tried to be supportive but he won't help himself its affecting your relationship... If you boyfriend can't helped himself to change his way, you have no choice but to move forward.

Life is too short to let negative people bring you down - I have learned this the hard way.

I think you need to tell him how you are feeling, if it is making you miserable you need to leave him. Do you love him? Do you see your future together getting any better? If he's going to be a toxic drain on you for the forseeable future you need to get out while you can. Don't feel bad about it - his happiness is not your responsibility.
References :
Should I stay with my boyfriend through his tough times?
I have been dating my boyfriend for over a year now and unhappy. For the past year, he has been through some obstacles: lost his job, family problems and now he has become sick. Before became sick, i've been contemplating if i should continue to stay in this "drama-filled" relationship. Since he has lost his job, he seems un-interested in me, especially in on a physical level. When we first started dating, he initiated sex, which was great, now i am the one initiating it and he doesn't want it. I really dont understand him. I've tried to be supportive through these tough times by sometimes covering the bill when we go out or just hanging out at his house. I've wanted to do more couple things (going to the movies, concerts, etc.), but didnt make it an issue because of his financial situation. I also suggested giving him space so that he could deal with these personal issues. he felt that he didnt want the space.

Now, he is dealing with health issues. I rarely see him and its killing me. I do visit him when i can but i feel that these obstacles are getting in the way of trying to make this relationship better. I want to stay because i want to be supportive to him. On the other hand, my needs aren't being met and the situation is not making me happy. would i be a bad person if decided to break-up with him? Shouldn't i look out for my best interest?
