Carbohydrates and the P90X Nutrition Plan

Take a trip 'round the internet.

A few words about getting carbs from fruits and veggies, rather from starch. I recently read an article on this topic featuring Joel Friel (google Joel if you don’t know who he is). Joel was on a bike ride I did yesterday and I wanted to share his theory on how to turn your body into a fat burning machine, rather than a sugar burning machine.

    Tony Horton says it …
Tony Horton says it is 50/50. I think it is 72/25 with what you eat being more important. I’ve seen countless people do P90X and not get great results solely because their diet wasn’t up to par. If you follow a plan like The Primal Blueprint from Mark Sisson you’ll exercise less, but you’ll eat so much better. Both are important, but nutrition is the king.

let me ask you something, what is more improtant?? what you eat or how much you work out??

    forget starchy …
forget starchy carbs. Stick to green veggies, fresh fruit, yams and sweet potatoes. Pasta, rice, bread, and grains is really not needed for most americans and people in general.

    Not sure where you …
Not sure where you got a daily readout of my carb intake, but I am currently training for a half ironman triathlon. The point of this video was exactly the one you are making. We have to adjust our carb intake based on activity. I picked up The Primal Blueprint yesterday and I’m certainly interested in what Sisson has to say about all this. As a former high level endurance athlete, his views are insightful.

    Dave eat’s too much …
Dave eat’s too much carbs. If you want to be shredded stick to sweet potato’s, banana’s, good fruits, grapefruit, etc. Don’t eat flour based carbs such as breads and pasta, potatoes. That is just a given if you want to minimize fat. Eating starchy carbs is no good unless you are climbing a mountain and need that energy. For most American’s it turn’s into fat.

Oh snap, I forgot to ask him. He’s coming out to Phoenix for his last fit camp in Jan and I’ll ask then. Tony is about 5’9″ and I’d say he probably weighs less than 170. He’s just shredded though. His back feels like he’s got two rail road ties running through it. Dude is insane.

I don’t think they do. We have some great stuff on our website that helps to track the portion approach. Can’t post a link here, but if you google “P90X Nutrition Guide”, our site is The Fit Club Network. Let me know if you have questions.

    The theory was …
The theory was developed by Joel Friel. I think there is some merit to it, but don’t avoid starchy carbs completely. What I thought was particularly interesting as I dove into it was the amount of carbs that you can get from fruits and veggies. Combined with the micronutrients, it is hard to go wrong. That said, I just finished a bowl of whole wheat pasta. Sat. ride tomorrow. Friel will probably be there. I may ask him about this.

    I agree with a good …
I agree with a good portion of what you said. Yes, fruits and veges are a great source of carbs. I have to disagree with you’re view on starchy carbs though. I think ever since the Atkins craze, all carbs have been vilified. I was part of this craze for a while. But now I believe that whole grain starchy carbs are vital to your nutrition. By whole grains I mean potatoes, beans, flax, oats and other naturally occurring grains and starches. The key is to avoid anything highly processed.

    Thanks for the …
Thanks for the comment, and you are correct. Just didn’t want to further confuse people with what already seems to be an extremely confusing concept (most people think that “healthy fat” is an oxymoron). I think the nutrition programs are good, but they could use a bit more in this department. Again, I think BB was trying to avoid confusing people with the healthy fat concept.

    Just to let you …
Just to let you know not all SATURATED FAT is BAD…for example: Fat n Coconut oil. Very common misconception. Coconut oil is has many benefits INCLUDING being a thermogentic. I have the upmost respect for p90 xers because I had used it with great results. Their nutrition programs I may have to question.

  16. thefitclubnetwork says:

    I think that’s fine …
I think that’s fine. Whole wheat breads won’t have the same effect as white bread would have, with respect to this theory. As a follow up here, I’ve been very interested to see the adverse reaction people have had to this theory. They sure don’t want to give up their starches. I had a triathlon this weekend and talked to a lot of people afterwards. The point is that fruits and veggies are much better for your body AND you can get carbs from them. Makes sense to me. Thanks!

hey. great video. what about whole wheat breads? p90x says i can eat them about twice a day, but do you think its worth it? id like to speed up my results..so what would you recommend?

    Assuming that Joel …
Assuming that Joel Friel is wrong about this, then it seems that a person looking to control carb intake would want to focus on fruits and vegetables as their carb source due to their micronutrient characteristics.

  20. whocouldaknown says:

    Fruits are more …
Fruits are more micronutrient dense than starchy carbs, but otherwise, there is nothing wrong with starches.

People “bonk” in endurance races because they deplete muscle glycogen. This is fixed through a) better training and b) supplementing with carbs during the endurance race.

It won’t really matter what you eat before the race as there is a maximum amount of glycogen that your muscles can store. Any extra carbs (from fruits or starchy foods) will just be turned into fat and stored.
